ABOUT THE WORK
Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Sfera con Sfera sculptures feature a striking golden exterior that opens to reveal intricate, interlocking shapes, exploring themes of fractured geometry and deconstructed technology. This layered structure symbolizes the complex contrasts of our modern world, with inner forms reminiscent of mechanical gears, reflecting both human and technological elements.
“The sphere is an extraordinary object because it reflects everything around it, creating such contrasts that sometimes it is transformed, becoming invisible, leaving only its interior, tormented and corroded, full of teeth...some say that it is an element of technology. I don't know, the relationship is odd...Everything inside a sphere is energy inside a form. The sphere can also represent the Earth, the world; today's world...Which can be consumed by the technology of civilization...”(Pomodoro, quoted in Arnaldo Pomodoro SPHERE WITHIN A SPHERE for the U.N. Headquarters, Rome, 1996).
Pomodoro’s vision comes to life in Sfera con Sfera, where the fractured surface and gear-like interior reveal a powerful contrast between the organic and the mechanical. The sculpture’s layered design serves as both a critique of technology’s impact on society and a hopeful vision of renewal. Through these elements, Sfera con Sfera extends Pomodoro’s reflections on modern civilization, inviting viewers to engage with their surroundings and consider technology’s role in shaping our world.
